Erin Bury's random musings: A definitive Community Manager job description

Great post written by Erin Bury on what being a community manager means.

erinbury:

When I met with Sarah Prevette about the Community Management job at Sprouter I had never heard the term before, and I really had no clue what the role meant within a company. This was late 2008 and it was still a really new position, without definitive job descriptions or templates. She…

Erin Bury's random musings: Why it's important to pay it forward

Now that it’s almost two years later, I find that new CMs approach me for advice. They want to know how I started out, what my background is, and what I actually do day in and day out. And, more than anything, they want to hear validation that they’re heading in the right direction. I’m always more than happy to offer my thoughts, even though sometimes I feel like I shouldn’t advising anyone - after all, it wasn’t long ago that I was standing in their shoes.

Earlier this week I met with another ambitious young CM, Naomi Mukai from Clip Mobile (a Toronto-based mobile coupon company started by my good friend Dave Offierski)…

Erin also blogged about our meeting the other day (and I’m blushing from some of the sweet things she said about me). To read more, click the link above the excerpt.

Tales from a New Community Manager

Finding my Feet

I’ve been adjusting to my new role as Community Manager at startup Clip Mobile for the last two months. Things weren’t easy at first. Not only was there the problem of working from home, there was also the problem of beginning my career and being totally broke for a few weeks. Thankfully, the adjustment period is over… My budget is under control, productivity is rising, and social gatherings are back in the mix. Now, I find myself reflecting on what my role has taught me since I started, what it means in a career sense, and how I can improve.

Naturally, I figured getting some advice from a fellow community manager would be a good start to tackling the philosophical dilemmas of a 20-something career girl adjusting to the real world. Today, I met with Erin Bury, Community Manager at Sprouter, which facilitates networking and collaboration for entrepreneurs globally.

Erin has been the Community Manager at Sprouter for two years, since she left the communications agency world for startup life. Erin succesfully leverages her work as a regular writer for publications such as BlogTO with networking, social media and brand evangelism to help her work and personal brands grow wherever she goes.

Talking with Erin made me realize a few important things.

1) Goals at a small/new business will almost always take longer to achieve than you hoped. That said, be happy with the small victories (such as increased engagement, better response to promotions, and new leads).

2) Startup life is good because you can really learn from it. You know how your social media/communications strategy relates to the larger goals of the business, and can be more involved this way.

3) Working at a startup gives you more freedom… You can work from anywhere, at anytime.

4) Because you are in communications with a small organization, it is sometimes easier to liaise with media and press. You’re not spamming anyone with press releases, and you have a great, human story behind you. Use it to your benefit.

5) Young entrepreneurs— such as Clip founder Dave Offierski and Sprouter founder Sarah Prevette— are probably the most hard working people out there. This “can’t stop, won’t stop” attitude is something we can all learn from.

Tomorrow, I’m meeting with Charise Garcia of Lucky Penny Daily and Kaeru Communications, so check back soon for more!
